ADOT Roadside Connectivity Solutions

How ADOT Connects Arizona's Highways with Enable-IT Ethernet and PoE Extenders

Arizona’s highways cross some of the harshest terrain in the country. Interstates run from the Sonoran Desert through high-country forests, past border crossings and into one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the United States. Summer pavement temperatures can top 150°F, and northern Arizona sees snow and ice every winter.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) manages this network with sensors, cameras and connected equipment that must report back reliably from remote locations. Most of those devices sit far from the nearest network switch.

Standard Ethernet and Power over Ethernet (PoE) stop at 100 meters (328 feet). Enable-IT Ethernet Extenders and PoE Extenders carry high-speed data, and power, far beyond that limit over existing copper cable. Inside ADOT facilities, Enable-IT 8805 PoE Switches power the security cameras and access control systems that protect staff and equipment.

Here is how it works, from the roadside to the office.

On the Roadside: Sensors and Cameras Across Arizona

Roadside sensors

ADOT’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) rely on vehicle detectors, traffic counters, ramp meters, weather stations and dynamic message signs. These devices feed the data that helps ADOT manage congestion in Phoenix and Tucson and warn drivers about dust storms, heat and winter weather in rural areas.

Many of these sites are hundreds or thousands of feet from a controller cabinet. Enable-IT Ethernet Extenders carry sensor data over existing twisted-pair copper, so older sites can join the IP network without trenching new fiber across the desert.

Traffic cameras

ADOT’s traffic operations center depends on live camera feeds to confirm crashes, clear incidents and keep drivers informed. Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) IP cameras on poles and overpasses need both bandwidth and power.

Enable-IT PoE Extenders send data and PoE power to each camera over a single cable, well past the 100-meter limit. That means no separate power supply at the top of the pole. Outdoor-rated models such as the Enable-IT 865W PRO Outdoor PoE Extender are built for sealed roadside cabinets in extreme heat.

Enforcement and highway safety cameras

Arizona has no toll roads, but its highways still depend on cameras that capture vehicles around the clock. Commercial vehicle ports of entry use license plate readers and inspection cameras to screen trucks entering the state. Wrong-way driver detection systems use cameras and sensors along freeway ramps to spot drivers going the wrong way and alert authorities within seconds.

These systems cannot afford a dropped link. Enable-IT extenders provide steady, low-latency connections from gantry and ramp-mounted cameras back to roadside equipment, even where fiber is unavailable or too costly to reach a single site.

The result for ADOT: more devices online, faster upgrades on existing cable and dependable data in conditions that push ordinary network gear past its limits.

In the Office: Enable-IT 8805 PoE Switches for Security and Access Control

ADOT’s district offices, maintenance yards and operations centers need the same protection as any critical public facility. Security cameras watch entrances, parking lots and equipment yards. Access control readers, door controllers and electric locks decide who gets in.

O Enable-IT 8805: Switch Gigabit PoE com 6 portas powers these devices directly over Ethernet, with no separate power supply at each camera or door.

  • Four PoE ports, two uplinks. Six gigabit ports: four PoE outputs for cameras, card readers or door controllers, and two uplinks to the building network.
  • Up to 30W per port. Enough for high-end PTZ security cameras and Wi-Fi access points, not just basic fixed cameras.
  • Plug and go. No setup required. Smart PoE detection powers only PoE devices, with automatic overload protection.
  • Fanless and rugged. A sealed aluminum case with no fans to clog with dust, rated from -40°F to 158°F (-40°C to 70°C), for wiring closets, guard shacks and unconditioned maintenance buildings.
  • Small and wall-mountable. At about 195 × 130 × 40 mm, it fits where a rack-mount switch will not.

When a camera or gate reader sits beyond 100 meters, such as at the far fence of an equipment yard, the 8805 pairs with Enable-IT PoE Extenders to reach it over a single cable.

The result for ADOT facilities: simpler installs, fewer power outlets and a security system that keeps running in Arizona heat.

Why Transportation Agencies Choose Enable-IT

  • Made in the USA. Enable-IT has designed and manufactured Ethernet and PoE products in the United States since 1999.
  • Aerospace-grade quality. AS9100D certification, the same quality system behind Enable-IT deployments with NASA on the International Space Station.
  • Built for government. A GSA Schedule contract and support for US Government networks since 1997 simplify public-sector purchasing.
  • Use the cable you already have. Extend Ethernet and PoE over existing copper and avoid trenching, lane closures and permit delays.
  • Made for extreme environments. Fanless, hardened designs for desert heat, dust and freezing high-country winters.
  • Patented technology. USPTO-patented designs for long-distance performance.

Keep Arizona Moving

From traffic cameras on the I-10 to the front door of a district office, ADOT’s network depends on connections that work in every condition Arizona can deliver. Enable-IT Ethernet Extenders, PoE Extenders and 8805 PoE Switches make those connections simple, reliable and American-made.
