Federal, state, and DoD network security policy is built on a foundational principle: the physical medium is the first line of defense. Wireless solutions — regardless of encryption protocol — transmit signal energy into the surrounding environment. That signal can be detected, recorded, and subjected to cryptanalytic attack. In classified, sensitive compartmented information (SCI), and other controlled environments, this exposure is categorically unacceptable regardless of the encryption strength at the application layer.

A hardwired Ethernet or PoE Extender has no RF emission surface. The signal travels over a physical copper conductor. Interception requires physical access to the cable — a threat model that is addressed through physical security controls, not network security controls. This is why DoD installations, intelligence community facilities, federal law enforcement, and critical infrastructure operators consistently specify hardwired solutions for any network run beyond the standard 100-meter switch-to-device limit.

Specific government security requirements satisfied by hardwired extenders

• TEMPEST / EMSEC compliance: Hardwired copper runs produce no broadside RF emissions subject to TEMPEST interception. Wireless bridging solutions are categorically excluded from TEMPEST-compliant installations.
• DISA STIG network topology controls: Defense Information Systems Agency STIGs require network segmentation and physical access controls on data links. A copper run is inherently auditable — its physical path is traceable and its access points are physically securable.
• NIST SP 800-53 / RMF controls: Risk Management Framework control families SC-8 (Transmission Confidentiality and Integrity) and SC-28 (Protection of Information at Rest) are more readily satisfied when the transmission medium itself does not radiate.
• Zero-trust physical layer: In zero-trust architectures, the assumption of a hostile network requires controlling not just logical access but physical signal propagation. A hardwired extender contains signal propagation to a controlled physical conductor.
